Ciutadella
Situated on the west coast of the island, Ciutadella is a stylish place to visit that is well known for sumptuous fish restaurants serving the local catch of the day.
Ciutadella was Menorca's original capital and the city oozes history with many sites to visit. Of particular note is Castell Sant Nicolas, a 17th century defence tower now used as an exhibition gallery (and also a beautiful vantage point for watching the sun set). Ciutadella's catedral is another stunning building, originally a mosque then rebuilt in 1287 when Alfonso III defeated the Moors and claimed Menorca for christianity. Wherever you go - do it slowly! Ciutadella is the hub of Menorca's café society, so take time to sit, relax and watch the world go by.
Ciutadella is also host to the island's largest and most popular festival. The Festes de Sant Joan take place 23rd - 24th June each year and feature a heady mix of processions, pomada (a gin based drink) and horse racing and jousting around the streets. It's a very lively event and visitors are very welcome - highly recommended if you can make it.
The nearest resorts to Ciutadella are in the surrounding bays of Cala En Blanes.

Museu Municipal de Ciutadella (0.2 km) - show on map
Originally built as a fortress, the Bastio de Sa Font was renovated as a museum in the mid 1990's. Thanks to many archaeological excavations, the museum can tell the history of the island from Pre-Talaiotic, through to Muslim times. Collections include Iron Age skulls, Roman coins and jewellery.
Cala Blanca (2.7 km) - show on map
Worthy of note only for the fact that, as a beach, it has been completely dwarfed by the development around it! Cala Blanca is probably not a beach to visit by itself, the attraction is the development of restaurants and holiday facilities around it.
Trotting races (3.3 km) - show on map
A popular sport in the Balearics for over 200 years, trotting races are held at weekends both in Mahon and Ciutadella. The jockey must prevent the horse from breaking into a gallop, hence the name "trotting". Great to watch but even better if you place the winning bet!
Naveta des Tudons (4.5 km) - show on map
The oldest roofed building in Spain and an ancient burial site (naveta meaning burial chamber) that yielded over 100 corpses during excavations in the 1950s. Admission is free.
Aquarock Menorca (8.2 km) - show on map
Aquatic fun for everyone, attractions include the famous kamikaze slide, plus (on a drier note!) there are go-karts, trampolines, mini golf and video games. Pricing details and further information can be found at www.menorcaaquarock.com
